This is absolutely disgusting. Frankie's, the old fashion soft drinks company, pitched their products to Woolworths, who declined. Woolworths then immediately produced their own line of 'old fashioned soft drinks', even using the exact same names for the products (like 'Fiery Ginger Beer' and 'Cinnamon Cola') and even using a line that Frankie's trademarked, 'good old fashioned soft drinks'.

Listen to the podcast of the discussion on Bruce Whitfield's Money Show on 702 / Cape Talk last night - it starts about two minutes into the podcast:

I also heard about this! Food24 has an article on it too, here:

And here's a YouTube version of the podcast, with just the specific section on the Woolworths/Frankies chat with @brucebusiness:

Big business has no trouble hitting the little guy if it suits them. Maybe if enough people complain to Woolworths or start an online petition if could help.

I heard that there is an online petition going on. Also have a look at http://www.woolworse.co.za.

I have been following this story on facebook where numerous brand pages have come forward to support Frankie's and there is a heated discussion on the Woolworths FB page as well by their fans....WW needs to withdraw their version of Frankie's product becuase they are going to loose many of their customers if they do not!! Follow the debate http://www.facebook.com/WoolworthsSA

I've also been following this on radio and I've heard murmurs that Woolworths is under great pressure to settle before the Advertising Standards Authority rules on the situation, which (if they lose) would mean them having to withdraw their product line which could be far more costly than simply settling with Frankies. Let's hope everyone wins in the end!
